America is safer now than it’s ever been; making the world safe for democracy, etc., etc.

If the US had demonstrated strength, excellent management, and competency in Iraq, do you think Iran or North Korea would be rattling their sabres now?

IMHO, Bush has made the classic military blunder of fighting the last was…. well… actually a few wars ago. He’s fighting the “war on terror” as if it were WWII.

I’d have offered some mercenaries a billion dollars for Osama, another billion for each terrorist head I wanted, and a billion for each (provable) cell they distroyed. I’d have saved billions of dollars, and the war would probably be over now.

Oops, that should have been “the last war.”

As the descendant of Irish mercenaries, I give that a resounding “indeed”. Shame we don’t utilize mercenaries more often. I’m sure they could use the work.

I would like to respectfully disagree. If we were fighting Iraq like WWII, Faluja would have been handled like Dresden (from above) as soon as the American contractors were incinerated and hung from the bridge and it would now be a parking lot. Baghdad would have been handled like Berlin. If the Russians couldn’t smuggle him out, Saddam would be dead in his bunker . In WWII, on D-Day alone we lost at least the 2500 dead we have to this point in Iraq on the beach in one single landing and the wounded from that day is probably aproximate to our number after three years, as well — for that 1 day of war. Osama has become a radio star wanabe, a bit like Lord Haw Haw, except he’s a fake Saudi (he’s really Yemeni) not a British turncoat. Zarqawi is– well, he’s the Green parrot of al Qaeda– dead, a defunct, late lion of Jihad.

Bush is the kind of moron who would launch a land war against Asia.

Or place a bet with a Sicilian where death is on the line.

I’m certain he’s sitting back now, staring at his little maps or whatever, saying to himself, ‘Inconceivable!’

Red, we would only do the things you suggest if al Qaeda were as strong as Germany — that’s the point. **We’re** fighting like it’s WWII. **We’re** fighting a gang of thugs as if they are a nation state (well, supposedly anyway — I strongly suspect the invasion of Iraq had other motivation, and oil wasn’t one of them).

Fighting thugs requires an entirely different strategy than warring among nation states; Bush doesn’t get that.
