Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever come across this idea in any science fiction novels. Who could have predicted that we would one day be able to take pictures that let us remember people they way we wish they had actually looked?

Despite this, people will still bitch that the camera adds ten pounds…

KITCHEN INTERIOR. WOMAN ONE is cutting celery at table. WOMAN TWO enters with printouts of pictures.

WOMAN TWO: Hey, I printed out our pictures! [Gives photos to WOMAN ONE.]

WOMAN ONE: Great! [Looks at pictures, becomes upset] Oh, dear. Well, you know, they say the camera adds ten pounds…

WOMAN TWO: Not with my HP Digital Camera, fatty!

I don’t like to think of myself as the kind of person who would have a favourite quote from “Friends”, but if I were it might be “…and how many cameras were on you when this was taken?”

Did you see how much you actually have to do to activate the effect? How many not-so-tech-friendly people will be able to dig through six or so submenus on that uncomfortable little four-direction button thing to find this feature? Most digital camera users I know who could… ahhem… benefit from this feature barely know how to turn a camera on and press the button. Heck, I myself rarely – if ever – even take the time to adjust the little setting wheel with the mountains and stick figures on it, or turn on the flowerpot mode, or set up any one of the thousands of other features my camera has. Of course if people are paying billions of dollars for weight loss crap, I might be underestimating how much they would be willing to do to take off those extra pixels…

hmmm, if it compresses the center image then…it must expand the outerimages. So, not only can you slim yourself you can make your friends look fatter!

How many HP engineers quit their job before Marketing finally found one willing to add this feature into the camera.
