Earning a fortune in Peekaboo Dance Dollars
Wow, I thought this was a British version of The Onion, for a minute.

I have to get one of those for my niece.

I wish people could condemn these things as “just a really bad idea” rather than “destroying children’s innocence.”
Because you do not have to be Pat Robertson to think that selling a poledance training video (Replete with “Peekaboo Dance Dollars” - why not pounds or euros? Are you trying to pin this on the U.S. or Canada or Australia?) to preteens is a bit much. I’d love to have borne witness to the entire creative process that created this scenario - from the creepy, trenchcoat-wearing guy who thought it up right down to the teenage stocker who stared at it in horror for a moment, shrugged, and put it on the shelf.

I love the second to last paragraph in the article the bestest, though:
“Tesco last night denied the pole dancing kit was sexually oriented and said it was clearly marked for “adult use”.”
Now, depending on where it was on the web site and yadda yadda, this could just be a whole big THINK ABOUT THE CHILDRENNNN for _nothing_.

Hey, they say it’s a “Fitness Activity” right in the article… Don’t you just love exercise?
October 26th, 2006 21:50
You got to this one before them, but they got it too.
Couple good comments.

I’d hit it. *wink*

To add some perspective to this: the Daily Mail is probably the single most sanctimonious and think-of-the-CHILDREN of all the British tabloids, and on a slow news day (or, hell, even a busy one) are notorious for running “the Internet/television/video games/the state school system/whatever are simply ruining our children’s lives!” stories. I mean, yeah, it was stupid of Tesco to put something like that in the Toys section where kids might see it and ask embarrassing questions, but I think the possibility of a pole-dancing craze among preteens is greatly exaggerated.

Nyder, you mean like this article?
And all from the people who brought us Monty Python’s Flying Circus…. tisk, tisk….
October 29th, 2006 06:55
Yeah, exactly that sort of thing, though that’s fairly mild by their standards: check out this one for more laughs, and for the use of their celebrated catchphrase “political correctness gone mad.”
As for Monty Python, well, the same country that brought us Jon Stewart also brought us Rush Limbaugh, so I guess we’re all even.

Even if it were being marketted directly to kids, which I find myself doubting (though it’s hard to go check exactly how it was positioned now), it’s not really like the wave of Daddy’s Little Sluts could get much worse. We’re in an era of hypersexed kindergarteners.

Now all we need is a picture of a preteen demonstrating the proper way to rake in the Peekaboo Dance Dollars submitted to A-1 and we’re all set.
As soon as we get A-1 back. (And that wasn’t meant as a stab at you by the way, Spinn.)

I’m sure we can look forward to that after fleeb’s niece’s next birthday.

Actually, today I found myself kinda missing the Magic 9 Ball…
November 1st, 2006 08:01
I’ll work on it.

Brennsa,
I think what kills the product for me is that I can’t imagine anyone of an age appropriate to practice pole-dancing would want to buy a product that contains “Peekaboo Dance Dollars.”
November 3rd, 2006 22:55
Maybe we should replace them with crack, booze and weed, then? Because real money is just so overrated.
November 6th, 2006 16:28
Ah. Apparently the kit does not actually contain “Peekaboo Dance Dollars.” Perhaps the designers are suggesting that you should train with the video, and then become a poledancer in America, Canadam or Australia.
