More A1 stuff
Ugh, well, as is my wont, I’m stuck on a detail. I’m not sure where to go from here with layout:

That’s what I have thus far, with the addition of some elements down the right side. Top is picture nav; after that is the pic number (#14) and maybe some info about it on the right; under that, any editor comments; under that, the entry form. I don’t like this so much because I feel like the elements for the current pic should be grouped better, and the pic nav at the top interrupts that.
However:

I like this for the organization of the elements associated with the primary page focus (the current pic), but it pushes the pic nav down too far. Especially because the editor comments are variable length, so the vertical position of the pic nav isn’t constant. (And I like having them right over the entry box, so you have to look past them to get to the entry form.)

Then there’s this mess, which I don’t really like at all, but it does put the entry form right under the existing captions, but they’re variable length too, so that could go any distance down the page.

I think the picture and captions should be in the middle. I don’t like them left justified for some reason (like I don’t like left-justified comics, I guess). Maybe the scrolly pic nav could be vertical instead of horizontal?

Didn’t IADL have the nav right above the current picture, with captions right below the picture? That worked pretty good, I thought.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that…I’m trying to get away from having it centered, it just uses up too much space. Mmm…I dunno, I keep going back and forth on that.
IADL had nav on the right and pic infor on the left. I think.

Out of these I’d vote for number one, just because it looks best. What does “maybe some info about it” mean? I don’t remember reading anything about the pics themselves..

Thinking as an editor, I’d put the entry box under the previous captions, even if that requires scrolling. The layout shouldn’t encourage people to submit before reading the existing captions. (Except for Nyder, we just accept anything she writes anyway.)

Yeah, but if someone doesn’t already read the existing captions first, placement alone won’t trigger it, imho. On the other hand, if they have to scroll down to find the submission form, we’ll get a ton of “Where’s the submission form?!” emails from people too lazy to scroll down (not to mention it’s just darn unintuitive for even the non-lazy).
I like the middle one, if the pic nav is going to be even close to that proportionately large.

I haven’t read any of the above comments , but my vote goes to any interface that supports Zompist’s view on the matter.

I don’t want to have to scroll to add a caption. If I’m on a role, no matter how lame, I don’t want to scroll for it. I don’t think quality will magically go up if you hide the entry box…mine won’t anyway. If the new captions are at the top then I don’t have to read down to far to see the new ones anyway. Why make me scroll for the heck of it?
Personally, I’d like navigation and caption entry below the picture and the scrolling entries to the right. I think that would let me make the most out of the limited verticle height on the laptop.
But ok, #1

I’m liking #2 myself.
(Also, how lame is it that I’m totally proud that some of my typing is a place holder? Super-double-extra lame, that’s how. Still… IN YOUR FACE NYDER!!)

Seems I submitted my opinions anonymously, how cowardly. I came back to claim them. Comment #8.

…Wait, Nyder’s female?
And yeah, #1 looks good to me.

I like #1 as well.
And I miss the caption contests, oh, please come back soon. The internet nostalgia is killing me.

*poke*
Hurry it up! Nothing can fill the void that A1 has left.

It’s been 6 weeks. I’ve thought of another option: captions are submitted here:
The message became garbled as it passed back through the bikers: the horrible injury up ahead was not, in fact, due to a frenzy of bik play.
ps: Really? Nyder’s female?

Dammit, I wanna caption contest!
I’ve been saving good pictures too! You should see the one with the falcon…
