King me

My blog-reading recently suggests that blogs frequently get these sorts of stories out before newspapers do. I hope you see this reported in the major newspapers soon.

Bush Anoints Himself as the Insurer of Constitutional Government in Emergency

President Bush has ordered up a plan for responding to a catastrophic attack. In a new National Security Presidential Directive, Bush lays out his plans for dealing with a “catastrophic emergency.”

Under that plan, he entrusts himself with leading the entire federal government, not just the Executive Branch. And he gives himself the responsibility “for ensuring constitutional government.”

Of course, I figured Giuliani telling farmers they’re not rich enough for him would also be picked up by the newspapers after it was in the blogs, but that didn’t happen. But really, I only wanted that to get picked up for the vindictive “if a Democrat did this, it’d be everywhere” reason. This King George thing is actual news.

How about the fact that the US Dollar is currently trading at $1.09 Canadian Dollars. Maybe that’s only an obvious negative sign for those of us Yanks near the border, but it wasn’t that long ago that it was around $1 = $1.35. I haven’t heard a mention of that in any paper though.

Holy crud, I didn’t know that, either. Which really sucks, because I have a few Canadian friends, and that’s entirely shut off a whole avenue of comedy for me.

Yeah, the dollar’s falling like a rock. All of my little rough mental conversion charts are falling apart and xe.com is getting depressing. Interestingly enough, the Japanese Yen seems to be weakening against the Dollar, but that may be an indication of their economy being recently so similar to our own. Every Nintendo product I’ve purchased over the years has been made in Japan until recently; my DS was assembled in China.

Also, this story sounds like the opening salvo of a near-future dystopian sci-fi novel where the oligarchs rule America in open defiance of the Constitution. “It all started with the innocuous announcement that King George would rule in case of self-defined emergency. Of course, we didn’t call him King then. Then came the Great Turnover of 2008″ etc etc

Gah. Unfortunately, I’m desensitized about this sort of thing to the point where I heard about it and then made with the snappy quip. About 3 years ago when I still harbored the illusion that this country had a fighting chance, I’d have been all “constitutionally impossible” this and “co-equal branches of government” that–with the blog postings, and the printouts for grandpapa.

Reminds me of the Mad Magazine cover where Alfred is holding the tree branch which supports his tire swing. Congrefs should pass a non-binding resolution condemning this shadowy power grab in the blandest possible terms.

I’m still optimistic enough to believe that Giuliani and/or McCain will win the black, heavily Democratic centers of Ohio, Florida and whatever other states they can plausibly rig between now and then. Next I’ll fulfill these lifelong dreams: burning a draft card, throwing a Molotov cocktail in an urban center and committing suicide by FEMA-empowered truncheon-bearing sniper.
