Yes, I really didn't know who Peggy Noonan is. She sounded familiar, but no, I didn't. As I've said before, I've only recently become interested in politics.

The president has taken to suggesting that opponents of his immigration bill are unpatriotic–they “don’t want to do what’s right for America.”

He's been saying that about anybody who opposes anything he does for years now. He hasn't 'taken' to doing anything.

Why would they speak so insultingly, with such hostility, of opponents who are concerned citizens? And often, though not exclusively, concerned conservatives?

I never understand the assumption that criticism of any segment of a group is intended as criticism of the whole group. Some immigration opponents are bigots, some do want mass deportation. Stating that does not mean you're implying that all opponents feel that way. Noonan knows this and is ignoring it so she can make a point.

Wow... I thought everyone knew who Noonan is. She's a former speech writer for Reagan and Bush Sr. She's been around forever. While she annoys the hell out of me, she does have a point. Bush was all for the wall against Mexico in 2004. He campaigned on a platform of xenophobia. Now, he's giving amnesty to those that he helped generate hate for. All those mindless neo-cons who learned to hate the brown people and were told it was ok to hate these people during the past 6 and a half years are now feeing really betrayed. A year ago, it was ok for them to hate Mexicans. Now, they're being told they're commies and traitors if they hate Mexicans. Sort of like how when Bush's numbers first hit the 30% mark Cheney told the nation, anyone who doesn't support Bush is a commie and a traitor and all but guilty of treason.

It really is Orwellian.

Hmm, I think this is the first time you've been angry in a post, kinda weird and scary and neat all at the same time. And it seems to have spurred a lot of writing for one blog entry. Mayhaps they should keep it up?

This speech is still very valid today, and shows a lot of quandary's with the direction the Democratic party is going as well. Possibly one of the best presidential speeches in modern American history as well.
