Why, there didn’t seem to be any hooting or shit-flinging at all!

In which O’Reilly is delightfully surprised at the civility of lower people:

Discussing his recent dinner with Rev. Al Sharpton at the Harlem restaurant Sylvia’s, Bill O’Reilly reported that he “couldn’t get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia’s restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks, primarily black patronship.” O’Reilly added: “There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea.’ “

Obviously; ice tea is only called for in such a manner in the south, and then by white rednecks. Sweet tea?! *pulls out rifle*

Funny enough, these are, more often than not, the same people who find Bill O’Reilly stimulating.

Gyah, it’s like he’s talking about how he time-traveled to a future where apes evolved from men, or something.

As much as I hate to do it though, you have to at least acknowledge that O’Reilly is just a dimwit whose perception of the black community is impressed upon him by the black media (see: BET) and, well, I don’t find that to be the best representation of the culture at all. But to him, it is probably the only exposure he gets (seeing as it also appears he won’t lower himself to eat at a place like Sylvia’s without an African-American counterpart to dine with).

Even if I acknowledge that, it doesn’t make him any less of a goddamned idiot.

But I don’t acknowledge it anyway. If that’s the limit of his experience with black people, then he’s the most insular celebrity ever. I mean I don’t think I’ve ever been in a primarily black restaurant, and I also don’t expect that if I went in one I’d risk being shot by a rapper.

My take is that he’s not being especially racist here (more than baseline bigotry for O’Reilly, anyway). But the fact that he’s allowed his perceptions to be shaped by the media indicates that he’s a moron of champion caliber. I mean, he should know perfectly well how the media shapes and twists and spins perception–that’s his fuckin’ JOB, man! He should know better than to rely on the flickering lies that appear on his TV.

    I see you, Martini!

Yeah that’s a great point, link it to his schtick. How can he be confused by this when he lives in the No-Spin Zone?

Was listening to Sharpton on O’Reilly and he tried to flip it around by saying what if *he* had said the same thing about a white restaurant.

What does Sharpton consider a “white” restaurant? I don’t think I’ve ever been to eat somewhere on a regular basis where I didn’t also see black people eating there.

Just to add a little fuel to the fire, maybe he meant a Jewish deli?

Eh. I’d give that to him as being shorthand for his version of O’Reilly’s statement: it’s run by whites, primarily white patronship.

I’d just like to know where the backlash that got Imus so quickly fired is? I mean c’mon people! Let’s see if we can put another governor in the hospital!

I don’t know about O’Reilly’s experience, but everytime I go to Slyvia’s I ask for the MotherFucker’s Ice Tea.

With a name like MotherFucker’s…you better ask nice.
