Scribs a-comin’

Usually, when I have something of mostly personal interest that I want to write about, I try to work out an interesting way of saying it. In his case I gotta apologize ahead of time, because I expect I’m going to ramble in an uninteresting way for a bit. This is mostly going to be Scribs minutiae.

So, I’m starting Scribs again. Typically I keep this sort of thing secret until the last possible minute, but that’s probably because I want to reserve the right to give up on a project if I lose interest. In this case, though, I have about 65 comics ready to go, so I’m in a good updating position. I’m shooting for having 75 before I start, which represent six months’ worth of updates on a M-W-F schedule. I’m hoping that’s enough buffer to stay ahead of the inevitable lapse of motivation.

So now the problem is more about the programming. I have to get my admin interface going; I have some organizational ideas for how updates will work; also, the q&a things seem to be popular enough to integrate them into the regular updates. I was having trouble getting into that but I’m making some distance. It’s getting tougher for me to get myself interested in programming these days.

Eh, there was more I wanted to say here, but now it’s a few hours after I started, and I realize the other things I was going to say were pretty much as boring as I’d feared, so nevermind. Let me skip to the one detail I think is neat: I’ve been using a sketchbook Debb made (one of her cast-offs that I’m lucky enough to inherit). I’m running out of paper in it, so she’s offered to re-sew it with new paper. Since I get to choose, I tried out two different kinds:

WHEW WE’RE SAFE …OR ARE WE

Recently I’ve been feeling good about the Scribs I’ve done, somehow they’ve gotten a more polished feel to them. And now I’m thinking it’s because I got lucky with the sketchbook I was using. The top one was on heavyweight, but smooth paper, which I thought I was going to like better; the bottom one is on resume paper, which has more texture, and is like what I’m currently using (except white, which will be better for scanning). The difference is subtle, but I’m a lot happier with the bottom one. It looks more comics-ish.

So it’s funny, but I think my interest in restarting Scribs happened because I was happy with what I was creating; and I was happy with what I was creating mostly because of the sketchbook I happened to have near me at the time.

Well, anything I would have wanted to say has been said, so I’ll just ditto it.

The bottom one is slightly harder to read. Just so ya know.

Are you going to include the ones from Facebook?

I am in fact cheating and including the ones from facebook as updates. Though I decided they weren’t up to the standard of the later ones and I redrew them.

A1 is coming back when I can get the motivation to program it. And I am barely scraping up some motivation to do the programming for Scribs as it is.

Is there any reason why you don’t draw on a touch tablet?

A1 Motivation: Free hilarity, increased site traffic, reunion of all these captioners lost in cyberspace, and… uh… chicks?

I certainly missed them as well. I look forward to their return.

The advertising idea amused me as well, although I think only Spinn saw my contribution before someone put up a paid advert.

I wish I had done a better job… I had a decent idea, but that darned interface they use sucks rocks for text-only adverts, and my correction didn’t seem to replace the original I created.

For those who missed it, I created a small advert on Scribs.us that read:

    Feeling blue…
Then how about some white text
    on a black background?

The ‘feeling blue’ bit had the underline-link style, and if you left the pointer over the advert a tool-tip said ‘Psychiatric meanders…’ (I mistyped ‘meanderings’ and couldn’t correct it). If you clicked on the advert it took you to amusing.org.

I do anticipate this comeback of Scribs. I’ve been a loyal follower since issue #227. Man, those were the days.
