The Grid
I went a bit out of sequence with this Scribs; I still have three more comics for the Nina arc to do, but I had this idea that I worked on over the weekend that I wanted to publish.
For years and years I’ve had this idea of a comic set up in a grid format, such that you can start from the top left, and go either right or down from each panel, with the strip still making sense in whichever order you choose. I never really took a shot at it because my thought process generally went:
1) hey, that grid idea
2) whoo, tough
3) lunch
But I decided “hey, let’s stop assuming things are too hard to do before I even try them,” and then I tried it, and I came up with three of them. The first one’s okay; it was my first shot, and nothing special. But I like the next two. I have a bit of an advantage that Scribs are a bit non-sequiturish anyway, but that’s fine, I think they’re still neat.

I can see why you thought it would be hard. I’m impressed you came up with three. Do you do a “core” 5-panel set and then add outliers?
Looking forward to the next two.

No, I started at the top left and sort of worked my way over. I decided the trick would mostly be about working with each 2×2 area to have the top right and bottom left to be vaguely related in some way, and hope I could build it towards a good enough punchline.

Aw maan. The Nina Arc has made me laugh the most out of all of your comics. Just saying, so keep up the good work! (Plz)

Just read all three Grids. Great work. The 3×5 is most impressive.
And yes, the Nina arc has been very funny.

Yeah, this most recent one is amazing.

Have you thought about writing a palindrome comic? Have it make sense, and be funny read left to right, or right to left? And then the bigger challenge, The Magic Square Comic.
