I’m reading “Magic for Beginners” and it’s quite good.
He did a double-take, consciously bringing his eyes around to the sign that his subconscious, peeking around the side of his vision while he was otherwise occupied, had read with enough alarm to make him take notice. But again his inner self had proved to be a very attentive, yet unreliable observer — when it (he?) metaphorically stiffened its theoretical back and wordlessly exclaimed, “hey, that sign says ‘Get Fit, Chicago!’” he had to see it for himself. However, it simply said “Get Fit Together”, which was a much more tolerable proclamation.
Had his subconscious been correct, he would’ve joined it in its mild irritation.
That form of bluster rarely seemed appropriate — “hey, do this RIGHT NOW, Citywe’rein!” — especially as now, when the command was issued from the front window of a storefront gymlet, down a side street of a side street, hardly able to make its demands known by people a hundred yards away, let alone the entire population of a major metropolitan city. As it was, however, the experience just left him amused at what effect reading a good book will have on the way he thinks.

Dammit! I was so close.

This is way off-topic, but I really wish you had the IADL thing going again, because I found this picture (which I hope remains at this URL):

I can understand IADL not coming back, the process of editing and archiving can be time-consuming/soul-sucking – especially if spinn’s heart isn’t into it. But man… can we at least have the forums back? I miss you turdburglars, including you, fleeb. And for the hell of it, I’m re-appending the ‘Man’ back onto my internet alias.
Dammit, Mr. Webe, get the hell off Facebook and come back to this side of the internet where we love you :(

For a forum that got like one post every three weeks? Sure, if you’re volunteering to log in every couple days to clear out the spam.

You got yourself a janitor.

Bil Keane passed away today; I figure his passing should be noted here.

And amusing.org got hacked. Grr.

K-Man! Yeah, we didn’t have a lot of postings in spinn’s forum towards the end, sadly. But that was one hell of a community in its day, I think… some of the brightest, most creative people I’ve seen on the internet converging on one odd place.
Not too geeky to write coding-related jokes, but not so pedestrian as to write rehashes of old internet jokes and try to pass them off as really funny humor.
And, Heath, yes, I saw a news article and thought about the DFC as well.

Ach, what the hell, man? I dunno how these idiots are getting in…I changed my shell/ftp pws to 15-chars-or-more versions, and my stock programs like WP and phpbb are up to date…eh maybe I got something older around here that’s vulnerable. Shit’s getting annoying, tho.
November 27th, 2011 22:19
Well, thanks to your latest profile picture, I now know why amusing.org isn’t updating even though it’s no longer hacked.

The community was awesome in it’s day. I was among the youngest at the time, but it upped the hell out of my humor game for years to come. So many laughs.
Oh well. It’s still great to see familiar names in the comments here once in a while, as well as amusing.org entries. I almost wish we could have a temporary reunion, a la picture captioning.
